Nourishing Communities Across the World
Think about the last time you felt really hungry. How hard it was to concentrate, to make decisions and to plan for the future. For millions of families around the world, that feeling isn’t temporary. Hunger affects every part of life, from health to learning to work to long-term stability.
That’s why we must focus on nutrition if we want to fulfill our vision of a world without hunger. Meeting immediate needs with nourishing food creates the foundation families and communities need to survive today and move toward a more secure future.
- The Challenge
Why Nutrition Must Come First
Around the world, 673 million people face hunger daily, and 2.3 billion — 28% of the global population — are food insecure. That means more than one in four people lack consistent access to safe, nutritious food.
Those living in rural or remote areas are especially vulnerable, often facing limited infrastructure, resources and opportunities to change their circumstances.
- Nutrition Programs
How We Meet Immediate Needs
To strengthen food and nutrition security, we invest in safety-net programs that provide immediate relief through nutritious meals. Each Rise Against Hunger meal — packaged by volunteers around the world — contains 20 essential vitamins and minerals. Meals are packaged for easy transport and preparation in areas with limited access to clean water or cooking resources. Then, meal distribution through trusted in-country partners ensures they reach the people who need nutrition the most.
At the same time, we work to build long-term resilience among these communities. Through regional procurement, we work with our in-country partners to source and distribute locally produced food, supporting economies while strengthening food systems from within. And because nutrition doesn’t exist in isolation, we also improve access to water, sanitation and hygiene — critical components of health, dignity and lasting food security.
- The Impact
Nutrition Support Transforms Futures
Together, these nutrition programs help build stronger, healthier communities that are better equipped to thrive. Over the next three years, Rise Against Hunger is committed to supporting 13.5 million people to gain reliable access to a sufficient quantity of nutritious food.
Here’s a glimpse of lasting global impact through some of the programs we’ve supported:
- Kenya: School feeding programs reduced child malnutrition from 8.57% to 2.47% (moderate acute cases) and from 4.37% to 0.52% (severe acute cases) across seven schools.
- South Sudan: Through on-site production of nutritious food and enriched meals, malnutrition cases were reduced from 31 to zero by 2024 for Hope for South Sudan, a residential school, and its surrounding community.
- Senegal: The establishment of 580 family gardens and the training of 1,133 people on gardening and nutrition helped support the full recovery of 127 children from malnutrition.
- South Africa: More than 1,180 early childhood development centers were supported, serving over 38,100 people and providing 2.9+ million meals.
