At Barye Fe Secondary School in Haiti, lunchtime is more than just a break in the school day. It’s a moment for students to gather with friends, have fun and enjoy a hot, nutritious meal.
Through our long-time partnership with Haiti Outreach Ministries, Rise Against Hunger has provided daily meals to the children at the school since 2007. The meals give students the nutrition they need to stay focused in class and continue pursuing their education.
There was one thing missing: a designated, comfortable place for the students to sit and eat. But that all changed recently! Rise Against Hunger provided funding for the construction of a new lunch patio at the school.

Construction kicked off in December, and the patio was ready for students to enjoy by January! 36 tables and benches were installed and weatherproofed to ensure they last for years to come. Each table has an umbrella, locally sourced to support the community’s economy, that provides shade and comfort.

The students now have ample seating while they eat lunch together, highlighting why our mission to help people worldwide achieve food security and resilience requires more than meals. Rise Against Hunger meals — packaged by volunteers like you — are a starting point for long-term community resilience.
The journey of a meal goes beyond immediate nourishment. At Barye Fe Secondary School, the daily lunches fuel learning and bolster school attendance. But nutritious food also deserves a welcoming space to be enjoyed! This lunch patio has provided exactly that and given the children a safe spot to gather. That, in turn, further supports the children’s academic performance.
Education and nutrition pave the way for bright futures, helping to break cycles of poverty and food insecurity in communities. That’s why Rise Against Hunger’s programs focus on nutrition, education and economic opportunity — because the work to end hunger requires a holistic approach. It starts with a meal, and that meal is one part of an extraordinary journey to building resilient futures.
