Create Empowerment and Take Action for Equality on International Women’s Day
This International Women’s Day, we hope you’ll join us in taking action to create empowerment in communities worldwide for women and girls. We’re challenging people around the globe to accelerate women’s equality. “An equal world is an enabled world” highlights this year’s International Women’s Day theme to not only celebrate the achievements of women, but also to raise awareness and reduce gender inequality. According to the United Nations, 60% of chronically hungry people are women and girls. For Nyugyet, her story in Vietnam is common with many mothers around the globe who worry about providing for their children “” which is why we believe that we must be #EachforEqual to make a change.
Nguyet was a young Vietnamese woman suddenly faced with living day-to-day when she became a single mother. She worried about providing adequate food, clothing and an education for her baby. Nguyet shares, “I could not see a future for me and my daughter.”
Today, a modest home with tile floors and a metal roof sits in the bustling city of Da Nang. Out front, wooden tables and folding chairs invite customers to savor a cup of coffee or a bowl of homemade noodles, which Nguyet rises at 4 a.m. each day to prepare. The steady stream of customers each morning know this place as “Nguyet’s Shop.” With support from our joint Empowerment Through Enterprise program with partner Children of Vietnam, Nguyet has grown her customer base significantly.
Nguyet is a role model for her 18-year-old daughter, who is continuing her education with earnings from Nguyet’s Shop.
“I want my daughter to not just survive as I did, but to enjoy life,” she says.
Just like Nyugyet and her daughter, women worldwide are in need of equal opportunity for economies and communities to thrive. The United Nations states that gender inequality is a major cause and effect of hunger and poverty. Creating opportunities for women will not only challenge the status quo but increase visibility and collectively assist in developing a gender equal world.
At Rise Against Hunger, we recognize that by empowering women through school feeding programs and providing equal access to resources, we will help to create equal opportunity in communities around the globe. With the promise of school meals, girls attend school and gain education for the future. With skills training and financial support, women learn trades, earn income and break the cycle of poverty.
